Teaching to Standards: MATH

WHAT IS TSM?
Teaching to Standards: MATH (TSM) is a research-based and image-rich math curriculum for middle and high school students with moderate-to-severe developmental disabilties, including autism. Two years of ongoing research at the University of North Carolina have shown the program to be highly effective in teaching math skills aligned to NCTM standards. The curriculum covers Geometry, Algebra, Data Analysis and Measurement. Written by Katherine Trela, Bree Jimenez, and Diane Browder.

TSM FOUNDATIONS

Teaching to Standards: MATH is based on exhaustive analyses of published research on teaching basic academic skills to students with significant disabilities. Findings identified geometry, algebra, and problem solving as areas in need of evidence-based instruction in order for students with significant disabilites to gain access to NCTM math standards. The research team developed interventions to teach academics aligned with general education curriculum to students with significant cognitive disabilities, focusing on secondary level content and performance standards.

HOW DOES IT WORK?

The goal of TSM is to provide students with disabilities access to a standards-based math program.

Each student has her own MathWork book. Daily lessons begin with a real-world story illustrated with picture cues, and are taught with fading support levels.

Stories are read to the students so no minimum reading level is required. A graphic organizer presents a problem for every story. Students write or place manipulatives to work out the solution.

Poster-sized graphic organizers help you teach group lessons. The 11 posters are 11 x 20 inches and laminated for durability.
