Practical Perspective: Communication Rights

A new year, a time to think about how to move forward and make the world a better place!

Most of us have an ability to say what we might want in a new year: Several of us make resolutions. How does a person who is nonverbal make those choices or resolutions? Individuals who are non-speaking have a right to communicate too! Consider making it your New Year's resolution to help someone to share their goals for this year and ensure that they can participate fully in communication interactions. Sometimes we may forget that supporting someone using AAC could require more than wants and needs in the present.

The National Joint Committee for the Communication Needs of Persons With Severe Disabilities shared a Communication Bill of Rights to address the communication needs of those with severe disabilities.
