Practical Perspective: Instructional Supports

 

Whew! You made it through the holidays! A friendly reminder that we have been reviewing and providing outstanding resources on five quality classroom indicators:

January – March is a strong instructional time of the year.  It is critical to employ and consistently use instructional supports.

Strong instructional supports provide:

  1. Staff actively engaged in instruction – Team collaboration must support an easy and consistent manner in which all staff understand what their responsibilities are each day. Staff should be actively engaged in instructional (academic and functional) activities throughout the day.
  2. Systematic instruction – Students learn best through proven and predictable instructional routines.  Lesson plans should provide step-by-step consistency in teaching and practicing skills. Each lesson should include appropriate prompt and correction procedures to meet the unique learning needs of each student.
  3. Recorded and graphed data – Staff must record accurate ongoing data on multiple learning objectives. When this data is provided in a graphed format, it provides insights into which strategies are effective and which strategies are not.
  4. Data-based decisions – All staff should provide input into decision-making related to student instruction.  Student success and achievement increase when staff are able to review the graphed data and provide insight within collaborative meetings; in-person or online.
