"We invest in our customers": Interview with Leah Bastian

Introducing Leah Bastian, the newest member of our marketing team!

Leah helps Attainment Company introduce products to people who need them through her marketing initiatives. Her previous experience as a direct service provider inspires her each day, and makes her feel especially connected to Attainment’s products and customers!

What was your professional path like before starting at Attainment?

My professional journey began with working at Kohl’s Corporation in Menomonee Falls in their Marketing Intelligence department: My degree in psychology and experience with analytics aligned well with the job. Analyzing customer information, marketing the Kohl’s brand based on preferences and shopping patterns, and assembling and sending emails were my focus.

While I enjoyed working in behavioral analytics, I wanted a more well-rounded experience with psychology. As a result, I became a direct service provider at a center for people with autism, moved on to become an assistant treatment manager, and then a senior treatment manager. I had the opportunity to work directly with clients in the center and in the community, and with families and supporting professionals to provide the best therapy for each child. I created worksheets and low-tech communication supports, wrote social stories, implemented functional behavior assessments, and trained direct service providers for clients ages 5 to 26. It was an amazing experience: Choosing to leave my clients was one of the most difficult decisions I’ve had to make professionally.

What interested you about working at Attainment?

Attainment Company was the ideal progression for me. It’s a unique opportunity to combine my marketing analytics and direct therapy experiences, all while working for a population that I hold close to my heart.

How would you describe the Attainment team?

I’ve only been working at Attainment for a few months, but in my experience thus far, the Attainment team is remarkably collaborative. If there is a project, it seems that everyone is ready and willing to help. If there is a deadline to meet, people are stepping up left and right. The variety of strengths and experiences creates an environment where everyone has something to offer the team. It’s a unique mixture of perspectives, ideas, and discussion that leads to exceptional products!

What motivates you and your colleagues?

Attainment Company strives to increase the resources available for one of the most underserved populations. Each day we have the opportunity to create, update, and market products to assist people with disabilities in a way that they may not have been supported in the past. We are a resource for making people’s lives easier and more fulfilled than ever before. It’s a rewarding and motivating company to be a part of!

As a marketing associate, is there a "typical" Attainment customer that you keep in mind when you're working?

There really isn’t a typical customer I focus on, which makes it all the more interesting! There is such a diverse number of products at Attainment, that the offer, product, or event that I am marketing determines the group to which I try and reach. This is all while highlighting the people who would benefit the most from it.

What makes marketing for Attainment unique?

Our marketing comes from a more personalized level. Because our account managers maintain good rapport with a number of consumers, we have an idea of what types of products would be most helpful to develop. When in turn, we develop one of these new products, we are especially excited to share it with those specific consumers. The environment that ends up being created isn’t solely focused on getting people to spend more money; it’s a matter of encouraging investment in the products that are most beneficial for them. Attainment also offers training for how to implement a product effectively and have staff available to answer questions. We market our products as a two-tiered resource: The product itself and the people behind it. The customer is investing in our products and we invest in our customers.

What is your favorite thing about living in the Madison area?

Madison is such a great place to live! The lakes, hiking trails in and around the area, and the farmer’s market downtown sure make me want to stay.

Thanks, Leah!

I am very interested in learning more about the Early Literacy Skills Builder. Is there a local representative I can talk to? I live in Northwest Iowa and teach at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa.

      Hi Anita,
While we do not have a local representative currently living in Iowa, John is the account manager of that area, and he would be happy to speak with you about ELSB. He will email the address you have included with this post. Thanks for your post and if you have questions in the meantime, feel welcome to email info@attainmentcompany.com!
