OK Different: Memoir of a Special Educator
By Diane Browder, PhD
OK Different is an inspiring story of Diane Browder’s remarkable life and career in education—special education.
Diane Browder, PhD, is Distinguished Professor Emerita of Special Education at the University of North Carolina, Charlotte. In OK Different, Diane shares her life’s journey and passion. She reconstructs the history of changing laws and attitudes toward, services for, and expectations of individuals with disabilities during her 40-year career—which began when there were no school programs for this population. She shares this history through stories of her encounters and series of encounters with individuals who would not be defined by their disability.
Diane’s memoir is authentic and delightful reading. It is ALSO an excellent textbook for special education courses that explore critical topics, such as laws, trends, advocacy, and making the least dangerous assumption about individuals with moderate-to-severe disabilities.
Written to give future professionals a sense of history they may not know, Diane hopes for future teachers to have a passion for creating more inclusive options, setting ambitious goals, and witnessing surprising achievements.
