CareerPass is an educational game developed to teach students about the tools needed to begin a career. This game was created by Project SEARCH students in the School District of Marshfield in Attainment's home state of Wisconsin.
"The original version was about our characters trying to begin a career and using their skills and tools to help within a hospital setting. After we created that version, we thought we could make this more universal to any career. This whole process took a ton of effort, but overall, we had fun creating the game and shaping it to be how we wanted....we set out to make the game for a classroom project, not realizing that we would have the opportunity to share it with so many more people."
As students move along the CareerPass board game and land on the various locations (e.g., Government Building, School, Employment Agency), opportunities are provided in the CareerPass Facilitator's Guide for teaching moments about that location's career tool. The Instruction Tips outline learning objectives and teaching ideas for each tool. An included QR code provides access to additional activities or practice in each career tool category (e.g., Good Hygiene Skills, Professional Attire, Identification).
Each location on the game board correlates to a career tool that needs to be collected. Check out the various tools and their locations!

To start the game, each player gets their game pawn, CareerPass lanyard with CareerPass card, and 10 Location Tickets (each of which can be redeemed for a Career Tool Question). Players roll the die and move the number of spaces listed on the die. If the student lands on a Crossroads space with a stop sign, he or she draws a Crossroads Card. Some cards are Oops! Cards that make the player move to a different location. Your cover letter didn't save! Go back to the Library! Some cards are Hooray! Cards that give the student another turn. Perfect Attendance - Good Reference. Move 1 Extra Space. When a player lands in a location, he or she can choose to redeem that Location Ticket for a Career Tool Question.
Select a question from that Career Tool category in the Q & A Reference Guide. For example, when a student lands on the Community Park, your question will be related to volunteer experiences. Pick one from the list: What is a nonprofit organization? If the player answers correctly, he or she receive the Career Tool Token to add to his or her lanyard. If the player answers incorrectly, they wait until their next turn to get another question about that location and career tool. The answers that the students give do not need to be exactly what is listed. The answers listed in the Q & A Reference Guide are there as examples. Each location also has a QR code that takes you to a digital resource to further develop this career tool with students.
The CareerPass game includes a game board, Q & A Reference Guide, Facilitator's Guide, 60 CareerPass Tokens, 60 token cables, 6 lanyard cards, 6 lanyards, Crossroads Cards, 60 Location Tickets, character pawns and stands, a dry-erase marker, and die.
Be the first player to visit all 10 locations, collect all 10 Career Tool Tokens, and win!
