In the Know: Health, Sexuality, & Relationships is a health and wellness curriculum designed to address sensitive topics like human growth and development, sexuality, pregnancy, mental health, and personal safety in an approachable way that will encourage students to participate in their learning. Each selected topic was written in accordance with National Sex Education Standards, when possible. In addition to following current science and topics of health and wellness, it also delves into teen-aged concerns and points of note regarding human development and practical tips for social behaviors.
Each chapter of In the Know: Health, Sexuality, & Relationships Instructor's Guide begins with a list of vocabulary, a breakdown of the Student Booklet mapping each section as it pertains to the National Sex Education Standards and the learning objectives, and the corresponding assessment. The chapter than continues with all of the text from each Student Booklet presented with scripting to assist teachers in presentation, as well as called-out areas of focus for easy reference.
Because of the wide range in students' maturities and levels of understanding, the In the Know topics have been broken into a series of individual booklets. This allows for teachers to determine what material is appropriate for each of their students. Teachers may choose to proceed through the booklets as created, or --if deemed necessary --omit particular topics. Each booklet was written as a standalone piece, independent from the other topics.
Each In the Know Student Booklet contains:
- Text specifically written to engage and relate to the student
- Highlighted vocabulary
- Age-appropriate comics to interact with students in a scenario-based approach to discussion
- Medical illustration-styled images to explain anatomy/ physiology in an accurate, clinical way
- Just Wondering… sections: First-person-styled "confessions" that pose questions and concerns that are then answered by the author
- {REAL}Talk! sections: Text designed to get to the core of concerns, dispel popular myths, and address other fact-based tidbits of information related to the topic
