The High Incidence ELA Package is a continuum of resources for students with mild disabilities targeting both literacy and English language arts skills, starting with PASS as a prereading curriculum for students in pre-K and ending with Taking on Tough Words for high schoolers struggling with reading and writing multisyllabic words.
PASS has three units of instruction, Rhyming, Blending, and Segmentation, with 76 lessons in a clearly constructed scope and sequence to ensure phonological awareness success for pre-K children. The curriculum aligns to state and national standards for English language arts using nine popular storybooks that link to the curriculum. Evidence-based practices are embedded in the lessons while criterion-based assessments are administered for progress monitoring.
Use EPACC as a complement to your core reading curriculum by making the connections of sounds to letters more transparent to students who are at risk of reading difficulties. EPACC focuses on specific skills validated by research: phonemic awareness, alphabetic understanding and fluency with the alphabetic code.
Next, the Sound Out Chapter Books provide students, ages 7-12, with systematic opportunities to practice decoding one-syllable and simple two-syllable words. Books and Software are organized into six phonics-based difficulty levels, three books in each level.
Build on the skills mastered in the other titles with Developing Reading Fluency is a researched-based program for students ages 10 to adult, who struggle to read text written at the fourth grade level and above. The program provides systematic and targeted instruction, and includes three components: Software, Teacher’s Manual, and the Passages to Reading book. Ideal for remedial reading, RTI and resource programs.
Lastly, implement the Taking on Tough Words to help upper elementary through high school students master the phonics rules and word recognition necessary to read and spell multisyllabic words. If students have not mastered this skill prior to 5th grade, accessing grade-level text can be challenging. These short lessons are ideal for remedial reading and resource programs. Lessons are scripted to help you know how to teach each rule. They are also carefully sequenced with increasing difficulty to help students approach multisyllabic words in their daily work with confidence. Ultimately, this High Incidence ELA Package is ideal for working on reading and ELA skills for students with mild disabilities.
