Discover, Investigate, and Grow into Math (DIG into Math) is a math instructional package designed to support access to the National Council of Teachers of Math (NCTM) content standards for grades 3-5 for students with extensive support needs. The package supports teachers with materials that guide students’ discovery, investigation, and growth in grade-aligned math skills following the DIG format:
DISCOVER: In each of the ten chapters, four lessons teach skills and concepts aligned to NCTM’s math content standards for Grades 3-5: Numbers and Operations, Algebra, Geometry, Measurement, and Data Analysis and Probability. At the end of each chapter, a CHALLENGE lesson explores the chapter’s big idea in a different context. Using a Model-Lead-Test lesson format, students are explicitly taught the skills and concepts as they work to demonstrate mastery identified in each lesson’s learning objective.
INVESTIGATE: For each lesson, student pages are used to reinforce the skills and concepts developed in the Model-Lead-Test phases. Students are provided with application (practice) pages as well as a CHALLENGE lesson and lesson assessment to demonstrate their level of mastery.
GROW: Suggested children’s literature is provided as an enhancement to each lesson. Using a Shared Story Reading outline (Courtade, Lingo, Karp, & Whitney, 2013) as a guide, students are provided an opportunity to grow their math skill or deepen their understanding of a math concept introduced in the lesson by active participation in a shared story aligned with the lesson’s content. For each CHALLENGE Lesson, an additional children’s literature title aligned to the chapter’s Big Idea is listed for the teacher to implement—integrating a shared story reading experience that more closely supports the needs of their students.
Materials include a DIG into Math Teacher's Guide, Student Book, two consumable Student Workbooks, Vocabulary, Math Symbol, and Shape Cards, posters, ten frames, coordinate plane, protractor, linking cubes, counting cubes, assorted shapes, and number lines, as well as two storybooks that are used during the Grow portion of the lesson: One Hundred Hungry Ants by Elinor J. Pinczes and The Doorbell Rang by Pat Hutchins.
