DIG into Social Studies is uniquely designed for students with moderate-to-severe disabilities who are working toward accessing kindergarten to second-level standards in social studies. It addresses the needs of students who may be nonverbal, who are early symbol users, who are symbol users, and those who may be reading text. With thoughtful preparation, you can meet the needs of all students!
The DIG into Social Studies K-2 Teacher's Guide contains comprehensive introductory, vocabulary, and Big Idea lessons to be used in conjunction with all four topics of the Student Book. Using evidence-based practices, the Teacher's Guide provides instructors with effective teaching strategies for all students. It also features content-based activities that instructors can implement to increase student understanding and foster engagement.
The DIG into Social Studies K-2 Student Book features four units of social studies with five, symbol-supported topics in each. Each topic includes content-based vocabulary words with parallels to real-world experiences. Age-appropriate illustrations create a visual world where students will see social studies all around them.
The consumable Student DIG Workbook contains activities corresponding to the lessons presented in the Teacher's Guide. Symbol-supported activities for each lesson are uniquely connected to the passages and Big Ideas, and offer several opportunities for assessment and progress monitoring.
The DIG Field Journal serves as a visual cue and for Big Idea recall. Upon completing each topic, students receive a Big Idea sticker as a reward. Additional rewards can be earned as stickers to encourage positive behavior throughout the lesson.
Posters of the KWHL Chart, T-chart, and Question Words Chart are provided for use in the DIG lessons.
Vocabulary Cards are provided for all chapter vocabulary. These cards can be used when using the Time-Delay strategy, Model-Lead-Test, as well as review activities.
A Time-Delay Procedure Card and Model-Lead-Test Procedure Card are provided for you as a reference to use when teaching vocabulary terms. Artifact Cards, sticker sheets, a dry-erase spinner, and digital resources are also provided.
